Senior Estimator
The role of Senior Estimator for HRGM is an important and detail-oriented position. It requires a person who can analyze contract requirements to understand how to meet the performance specifications dictated by the client. In today’s construction market, contractors are asked to partner with Owners and General Contractors to not only build projects, but to help design them as well. “Design-Build”, as it is known, is utilized as a cost-savings technique for HRGM’s government clients where financial resources are constrained. This process moves the design burden and costs onto the contractor whereby the client provides a set of performance guidelines. It is up to the contractor to design the building in the most efficient way to meet these requirements. As a result of this, HRGM requires a candidate who is able to understand these performance specifications, who has the ability to analyze contract requirements. Candidates should be familiar with BIM, LEED, and Lean for construction, as these industry trends will affect the outcome of project cost. This is in addition to the basic requirements of field estimating which are performing take-offs, and utilizing on-screen estimating programs.
Successful candidate will be asked to attend and participate in pre-construction meetings with the client, and conduct project start-up meetings with subcontractors or vendors as needed.
Additional Specific Duties Include
Screen leads and source project opportunities for commercial construction projects typically ranging $1M - $8M.
Analyze contract requirements to understand how to meet the performance specifications dictated by the client.
Analyze drawings, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to prepare time, material, and labor cost estimates for projects.
Exercise care, good judgment and risk reduction practices to protect interest of company and reduce potential liabilities when budgeting projects.
Develop a strategy to achieve minority participation requirements.
Examine and prepare BIM, particpate in Pull Planning Lean Construction sessions with other contractors to assess construction activities and BIM models.
Must be proficient in performing take-offs using On-Screen Take-off Software and Bluebeam Software.
Significant experience with construction software including Building Connected, Procore, Project Team, Prolog, BIM, Bluebeam, Sage, On-Screen Takeoff and Microsoft Suite
Solid proficiency with spreadsheets, email and other software used in the construction Project Estimation & Scheduling
Supervise Jr. Estimators in preparing scope of work, RFIs, submittals, close-out documents and schedule for construction projects.
Proficient in soliciting subcontractor and/or vendor quotes and evaluating them for scope and qualifications.
Optimize plans and schedules for projects following a logical pattern for utilization of resources or cost loading.
Attend and participate in pre-construction meetings with clients.
Lead meetings with subcontractors to develop complete scopes and discuss strategy, and conduct project start-up meetings as needed.
Manage RFP process.
Develop change order estimates and deliver proposals to clients with thoughtful correspondence.
Manage project startup documentation in Project Team, Procore and Prolog Software.
Track quantities of completed work against original bid.
Analyze trends from historical database of past and present construction projects, materials, and labor durations.
Use historic project database to assist Project Managers and Superintendents to determine activities that might negatively and positively impact the schedule or the budget.
Stay informed of current product, systems knowledge, industry practices and technology tools.
Establish and nurture relationships with industry professionals, suppliers, general contractors, subcontractors and public agencies
Create a strategy on how to use AI to make estimating work more efficient
A successful candidate will be able to develop cost-effective plans and schedules for completion of projects following a logical pattern for utilization of resources or cost loading. In addition, the candidate should be able to assist in subcontractor negotiations, scope development, purchase order requests and buy-outs of material and labor.
Finally, Estimators are responsible for creating and updating a database that tracks historical data of past and present construction projects, materials, and labor durations.
The successful candidate will work with HRGM’s Project Executive, Senior Managers, as well as the Director and President of the company. An understanding of construction management and the ability to perform across a myriad of project types – Design-Build, On-Call/IDIQ, and Lump Sum – are integral competencies required for this job. A basic working knowledge of civil, architectural, and MEP disciplines, as well as the ability to communicate effectively and manage multiple stakeholders are the foundation for success in this role. Candidate must be proficient in on-screen take-off software.
Additional Requirements:
4-year Civil Engineering or Construction Management degree or equivalent.
Knowledge and experience of civil, architectural, mechanical or electrical discipline.
Excellent analytical skills and the ability to effectively use a variety of estimating, scheduling and reporting software tools.
The ability to effectively communicate with management, subcontractors, customers and peer group.
Ability to understand field conditions for the purpose of estimating project work.
Understanding of corporate policies, industry practices, construction technology, equipment and methods, negotiations, engineering, construction costs and estimating, scheduling, and safety requirements is necessary.
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills required. Professional conduct in a business environment is essential.
Ability to work under pressure and coordinate numerous activities and groups of people who need to cooperate to achieve maximum efficiency.
HRGM is an E-Verify company and candidates will have to pass a criminal background check.
Must possess a valid driver’s license
Candidate must be willing to become OSHA certified
