Skilled manual work in connection with water and sewer construction, maintenance and repair projects; all other related work as required
Requirements
Working under the direction of the Foreman, performs the following functions:
Operates trucks in excess of 26,001 pounds and other equipment assigned to construction and maintenance projects, uses specialized tools such as air compressor, jackhammer, drill, tapping machine and pipe cutter.
Uses both power pneumatic and hand tools such as but not limited to cut off saws, chain saws, cutting torches, lawn mowers, portable electric tools, screwdrivers, wrenches, sledge hammers, shovels etc.
Errors could result in the waste of materials, damage to equipment, excessive costs, or personal injury.
Installs water services, tapping into the distributions system; installs water mains, hydrants, and gates; installs, checks and reads meters.
Installs sewer services; cuts and lays pipe; maintains and repairs buildings, equipment and well fields.
Repairs water mains, hydrants and gates; performs minor plumbing work.
Performs minor mechanical work on department trucks and equipment; repairs pumps and various small tools.
Performs ground work including cutting grass and brush; shoveling, painting and flushing hydrants.
Must be available in the town snow and ice removal program by plowing snow and de-icing roadways and parking lots, and remove ice and snow from walks, drives, and pavements.
Other projects and duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School education or G.E.D.
A minimum of one year experience in water and sewer construction and/or repair or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
Must possess and maintain an active Massachusetts Drinking Water Supply Facilities Distribution license, or ability to acquire one within one year.
Knowledge, Ability, and Skill:
Working knowledge of public works equipment operations construction practices and maintenance procedures.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying and possible extreme weather conditions.
Must be able to receive and comprehend verbal and written instructions appropriate to DPW construction and maintenance activities.
Must be able to do "on call" or "stand by duty" as directed by superior
