Working as the Chief Engineering Inspector, you can expect to oversee and coordinate inspections of Town construction projects and private developments to ensure they meet all standards for quality, safety, and compliance. You’ll supervise, plan, and schedule the work of the inspection team; conduct performance evaluations; and make recommendations regarding hiring, promotions, and other personnel actions. Regular meetings with inspectors will allow you to review progress, address challenges, and maintain consistency in inspection practices. In this role, you’ll travel throughout the Town to inspect projects firsthand, assist inspectors with complex situations, and verify that materials, workmanship, and construction practices meet approved plans and legal requirements. You’ll also compile specifications for Town construction project bids, perform final inspections on new subdivisions and public improvements, and provide recommendations for acceptance or rejection. Additionally, you’ll inspect construction materials and equipment—which may require lifting or entering confined spaces such as sewer and drainpipes—and work closely with contractors to ensure compliance with Town specifications, taking corrective actions when necessary.
