Description
The City of St Clair is seeking a contractual or Part time Building official to serve under the general direction of the City Superintendent as a construction code enforcement person working as an inspector, or plan reviewer, or actively engaged in the administration and enforcement of adopted building, electrical, mechanical, or plumbing codes, or any combination of these codes.
As Building Inspector, the employee enforces laws and ordinances relating to the Michigan Construction Code, plan reviews, issuance of permits, stop work orders, certificates of occupancy and citations as well as local zoning and code of ordinance requirements. Assigned to the City Building Department and works closely with other city departments to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances including but not limited to the Department of Public Works, Engineering consultant, Planning Consultant and Fire Department. Enforces code and ordinances relating to building, and property standards by applying developing procedures and policies for making inspections to ensure that each of the activities conform to city ordinances and State law. Conducts meetings with builders, architects and their technical staff, residents, property owners, staff as appropriate to promote a common understanding of city ordinances and codes.
Recommends to the Superintendent changes in codes and ordinances to keep abreast of new concepts, practices and procedures and materials.

Education and Experience
Associates degree in construction management or architecture preferred.
Seven (7) years of recent full-time experience including a combination of building construction, planning, zoning, inspection and plan review, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Strong management and leadership skills with at least three (1) years of full-time supervisory experience preferred

Must possess a valid Michigan Driver’s License in good standing. Must hold a Building Official, Plan Examiner and Inspector Registration as designated by the State of Michigan.

Hours: Average 25-30 Hours per week as set by City Superintendent.
Independent Contractor Relationship preferred, Part-Time Position may be considered.
Building Inspector: i) A residential builder's license issued by this state and 6 years of experience immediately preceding application in any 1 or more of the following professions: (a) a contractor in general building construction as a contractor (b) a skilled trades worker (c) an individual who was in charge of structural construction. ii) A license as a building inspector from other states or foreign countries with inspector experience in building construction. Must provide requirements for licensure prior to approval from department. iii) Seven years of experience in general building construction in any 1 or more of the following: (a) a building contractor (b) a person in charge of general building construction (c) a project manager, superintendent, supervisor or foreman actively engaged in general building construction immediately preceding submission of application (d) a skilled worker in structural carpentry, structural masonry, structural steel erection, or structural concrete construction who has been actively engaged in the general building construction field immediately preceding application (e) a current license as an architect or engineer under article 20 of the occupational code, 1980 PA 299, MCL 339.2001 to 339.2014. CONTRACTOR AND GENERAL CONSTRUCTION DOES NOT INCLUDE A PLUMBING, ELECTRICAL OR MECHANICAL CONTRACTOR LICENSE.
